This week the Tytherington Women's Group were able to send off their collection of donated toiletries, period products, and baby products to the Silklife food bank. As you can see from the photographs, the school community's response was, as ever, astonishingly generous and the group were able to fill a trailer with donated items.
The Women's Group had wanted to organise the collection in order to tackle the issue of hygiene poverty. Hygiene poverty is when people are not able to afford many of the everyday hygiene products most of us take for granted, such as shower gel, shampoo, and period products. People in poverty often find that they are caught between being able to heat their home, pay their rent, buy food or keep clean. This can have an incredibly detrimental effect on their self-esteem and mental health, and can lead to social isolation.
The toiletry items donated will be added to food parcels for people in need in the local community, and will provide important support for those people struggling to afford them. The nappies and other baby products donated will be added to the food bank's new 'nappy bank', which supports those families in the local area with such items.
Ms Wallett, Deputy Head of History and organiser of the Women's Group said: "We have been blown away by the generosity of the student community. The Women's Group have worked tirelessly to tackle this community issue. Thank you to everyone involved."
Thank you to everyone who supported the collection.
